Three Planes of Motion: Sagittal, Frontal, and Transverse No.2

Having an awareness of the three planes of motion will enable you to think of yourself as a three dimensional being.  Understanding the planes - even if subconsciously - will help you find the muscular and structural opposition needed to support a pose or a movement. While standing in line at the grocery store, your sagittal plane is hard at work to keep your posture upright, front and back support. Alternatively- if you were a pink plastic flamingo - standing on someone’s front lawn on one leg, lateral support would be keeping your pelvis aligned over that single femur bone (your standing leg) - this lateral support is the frontal plane in action. Fitness routines should include all three planes of movement. Think of our new quarterback for the Patriots, Mac Jones, when he passes the ball, the windup, this is the transverse plane in action.  Yet the tight end at the other end of the field  - is running while looking towards Mac -he is probably running both in his sagittal plane (straightforward for speed) and in his frontal plane (sideways - in order to see and catch the ball).
